Our Accomplishments

The Project AWARE Foundation has unique partnerships with individual divers, dive professionals, snorkelers and water enthusiasts from all walks of life. Together we've made great strides towards conservation of fragile underwater environments. Just a sample of these accomplishments include: Scuba divers transplanting coral 

  • Educated more than 15 million divers and water enthusiasts on how they can sustainably interact with and protect the underwater environment
  • Coordinated 10 years of underwater cleanup projects in 100 countries and territories around the world
  • Coordinated and sponsored hundreds of mooring buoy projects to protect vital aquatic ecosystems
  • Created several environmental specialty courses for divers and snorkelers in cooperation with PADI
  • Trained dive professionals and resource managers through regional Coral Reef Conservation seminars
  • Heightened public awareness for nearly 10 million viewers with Protect the Living ReefProtect the Sharks and Sustainable Fisheries public service announcements for television and cable networks
  • Launched The International Whale Shark Project and Whale Shark Identification Specialty course to gather information and protect threatened whale sharks
  • Provided funding for more than 2 million dollars (US) in funding for grass roots environmental projects, species research and protection efforts
  • Supported conservation legislation including the Magnuson-Stevens Fisheries Management Act, Seabed Protection Act, Coral Reef Conservation Act, the Executive Order on Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and Shark Finning Bans in the United States, Australia and Europe
  • Participated as an active member of the US Coral Reef Task Force and Marine Protected Areas Federal Advisory Committee
  • Introduced coral health monitoring programs for divers
