| Diver Votes Counted on a Global Stage |
Project AWARE Foundation represented scuba divers worldwide at the largest environmental meeting on the planet - the 2008 International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) World Conservation Congress in Barcelona, Spain. Project AWARE joined the world’s top scientists, governments, organizations and representatives to debate and frame the next four years of the global environmental agenda. Sharks, coral reefs and climate change were on top of our plan of action.

| Treasure Trove of Trash: International Cleanup Day 20 September |
Join teams of divers and community activists during the world’s largest volunteer event of it’s kind. Every year thousands of Project AWARE Foundation volunteer divers and water enthusiasts will get dirty for a good cause in more than 100 countries on International Cleanup Day - and keep coming back for more. This September 20th, thousands of volunteers are needed to help remove trash from the world’s shorelines and underwater environments.

| Clean up Russia 2008 |
On 1st June, 18,000 divers and water enthusiasts joined in the annual Clean Up Russia activities, coordinated by the PADI Russian Distribution Centre in association with Project AWARE. Participants in Russia, the Ukraine, Belarus, Latvia, Estonia and Kazakhstan took part in the biggest ever Clean Up Russia event in the region, making this year’s event another resounding success.

This July, the United States House of Representatives approved the landmark “Shark Conservation Act of 2008”, a bill aimed to combat the wasteful practice of shark finning (the removal of shark’s fins and discarding the often still alive shark at sea).

In support of International Year of the Reef (IYOR 2008), Coral Cay Conservation have used the £41,000 grant they received from the Jack Petchey Foundation (JPF) to benefit underprivileged young Londoners through their ‘2008 Coral Reef Conservation Scholarship Programme’.

| Stronger EU Shark Conservation Actions |
In a bid to encourage a new era of responsible EU shark fisheries management, PADI and Project AWARE, together with the Shark Alliance (a coalition of shark conservation organisations) have lobbied the European Parliament to promote immediate shark conservation actions and a strong community Plan of Action (CPOA) for Sharks to ensure sustainable shark fisheries for the future.

| International Cleanup Day - Project AWARE Cleanup Fundraising Challenge |
For International Cleanup Day 2008, Project AWARE Asia Pacific are calling on divers to help raise much needed funds for underwater conservation by joining the Cleanup Challenge! This unique fundraising challenge asks people to raise a minimum of AU$300 by holding a simple fundraiser such as a cleanup day BBQ, auction or raffle. Cleanup Co-ordinators who make this commitment will receive twenty cleanup bags absolutely free.
